Frequently Asked Questions
Click on a tab below to see answers to common questions.
Q: How do I book a session?
Contact me via email and let me know when you are available to talk. I’ll have three questions for you:
- How is the headshot being used? This will help me better understand your needs.
- What kind of background do you prefer? I have a range of colors available including some textured backdrops. I can also create a gradient behind you with lighting.
- How much contrast do you prefer? Most headshots are evenly lit from the front of the face, or slightly off center, with a shadow under the nose and chin. If you have something specific in mind, you can send me a picture. I’d be happy to duplicate the effect.
Q: I love more than one headshot from my session. Can I select more than one?
Yes! You can add additional image(s) for $100/image.
Q: How do I pay for my session?
I will send you an e-transfer link prior to delivery. Alternatively, you can pay with cash or cheque during the session.
Q: Where are you located?
I’m located in South East Calgary, Alberta (McKenzie Lake). I will send you the exact location when the appointment is confirmed.
Q: What does “On Location” mean?
For a more personalized headshot that projects a sense of the business environment, some people use part of their business setting as the background for their headshot. In these cases, a longer lens is used to narrow the field of view and throw the background out of focus. This type of headshot adds some colour and visual interest while conveying an often warmer sense of tone than a studio headshot. “On Location” headshots include travel to your place of business, a mobile studio set up, 55 minutes of time, and one finished headshot. Additional images or additional set-ups may be added for a fee.
Q: Do you have group rates for office teams?
Yes, I offer headshot plans for small teams and large groups. I come to your place of business and set up a mobile studio. Team members are photographed back to back according to a pre-made roster. Time slots are approximately 6-10 minutes/person including image selection. Contact me for rates.
Q: Do I need a makeup artist?
No, if you are comfortable applying your own make-up you should be fine. Our recommendation is to tone down contrasty effects and
avoid makeup with an SPF. The ingredients tend to reflect light and give skin a shiny appearance on camera. Bring your makeup to the session in case you want to do touch ups. Make up artists are welcome.
Q: What should I wear?
Your primary consideration is your audience. Consider who is going to see the image and how you want them to feel about you. For example, an Etsy storefront owner selling custom jewellery may want to feel friendly and welcoming, while a lawyer may want to present as experienced and powerful.
In all cases, ensure clothing is clean, in good shape, wrinkle-free, and pressed where appropriate. Avoid logos or lettering unless it is part of a uniform. Solid colours work well. Clothing with lines and shapes can become easily distorted with folds and cause distractions. Do a trial run at home, if possible, and look critically at the clothing.
For a personalized image or for branding, consider props or special articles that may add visual flair: a scarf, leather jacket, fedora, etc. We can shoot with and without the item…
Q: Any tips for men?
Careful attention should be paid to the preparedness of clothing and grooming. Shirts should be pressed and wrinkle-free unless they are completely hidden behind a blazer and tie. If you’re unsure if you want a semi-casual or a formal look, be prepared with both looks, and carry an ironed shirt separately. Secondly, Men should consider their grooming on or around the ears, neck, and nose. If clean-shaven, look for missed stubble around the mouth or on the chin. In high resolution, everything is visible.
Q: What if I need to cancel?
You can reschedule appointments up to 24 hours before your scheduled session. Missed, late, or sudden cancelations will be charged $50 to rebook. If you’re not feeling well, there is no cancellation time frame, and the fee is waived. If you or anyone in your home develops a cough, fever, sniffles, shortness of breath, please contact us to reschedule.
Q: What happens during my session?
We’ll start with some test shots and conversation, during which we’ll review your needs for the headshot. When the lighting and composition are satisfactory, we’ll ease into a more directed shoot. Periodically, I’ll show you our captures on a computer display and we’ll flag some picks. At the end of the session we’ll review the captures and narrow down your selection(s). You’ll know what you’re getting before leaving the studio.
Q: Is there a bathroom or change room on site?
Yes. There is bathroom/change room.
Q: Can I change my outfit during my session?
For a “Single Headshot” session, I recommend bringing one main outfit and one outfit for backup. If we finish early, or if something isn’t working, you’re welcome to change clothes.
For a planned change of clothes, I recommend the “Two Headshots” option which includes additional time for an outfit change, plus a second finished headshot.
Q: What happens after my session?
I’ll process and retouch your final selected headshots then send you a download link.
Q: What is image processing?
Unlike camera phones, which enhance color and contrast in real-time to create finished files, professional camera files require some degree of processing after-the-fact. Your headshots are also retouched and color graded for a signature look.
Q: Do I get all the photos from my session?
No. You only receive the final processed JPG files included in your package. This includes low resolution and high resolution versions of each included headshot.
